Situation on the Ground
As we began 2023, Syria already faced a multitude of challenges that made it one of the world’s most complex humanitarian and protection emergencies. After twelve years of crisis, most Syrians faced a context of continuing humanitarian decline. Then, in February, northern Syria and southern Turkey were hit with a massive earthquake and multiple aftershocks that further exacerbated compounding hardships: deteriorating socio-economic conditions, poor infrastructure, lack of electricity, and an ongoing water crisis.
These dynamics continue to overstretch an already weak health system. Only 59% of hospitals and 57% of primary health care facilities are fully functioning, which has direct consequences on vulnerable communities and patients by increasing morbidities and mortality. Female-headed households, older persons, persons with disabilities and children are affected disproportionately by the compounding drivers of the crisis in Syria.
MFA’s Primary Healthcare Center was not damaged by the earthquakes earlier this year. Although MFA’s PHC and the community it serves do not face the task of physically rebounding and rebuilding, the earthquake and its effects have and will continue to exacerbate challenges in the area and further tax overextended humanitarian response.
Primary Healthcare Center's Impact
Since this project went live on GlobalGiving, MFA's PHC has served 10,114 individuals by providing free health services and prescription medications.
An ongoing cholera outbreak continued to impact northeast Syria during this timeframe. As a result of the outbreak, MFA’s PHC treated an increased number of patients exhibiting symptoms of cholera during the grant period. For severe cases, we referred patients to specialized services for additional care.
MFA also continues to leverage the PHC to implement special projects throughout Northeast Syria. During this timeframe, we leveraged our PHC staff to complete essential relief deliveries to the surrounding area, as well as coordinated the installation of a clean water unit at a nearby school.
