Before Kidney Failure: The Case for Early Intervention
Project Report | October 2026

A Growing Health Crisis
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is often silent in its early stages, progressing without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. For vulnerable families in Pakistan, late diagnosis can mean a lifetime of expensive treatment and financial hardship.
A landmark 2025 study published in The Lancet estimated that 788 million adults worldwide were living with CKD in 2023, more than double the estimated 378 million in 1990. Kidney disease was the ninth leading cause of death globally, accounting for approximately 1.48 million deaths in 2023.
Why Pakistan Needs Early Detection
Diabetes and hypertension are major risk factors for kidney disease. According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 34.5 million adults in Pakistan were living with diabetes in 2024, highlighting the importance of preventive kidney care.
The KDIGO 2024 Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend assessing people at risk of CKD through kidney function testing and urine albumin measurements. Early identification creates opportunities for treatment and monitoring that can delay disease progression.
Our Commitment at Fatima Memorial Hospital
Fatima Memorial Hospital's Nephrology Department remains committed to accessible kidney care through specialist consultations, diagnostic services, hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis.
Our priorities include improving access to early screening, supporting patients who cannot afford essential treatment, and strengthening our peritoneal dialysis programme. Home-based dialysis offers eligible patients an alternative to hospital-based treatment and can help address pressure on limited dialysis facilities.
Your Support Can Change the Outcome
For a family facing kidney failure, access to timely medical care can determine whether treatment remains possible and affordable.
Your contribution helps us work towards earlier diagnosis, greater treatment accessibility, and sustainable kidney care for patients who need it most.
Support the Prevention of Kidney Diseases Project
Thank you for standing with Fatima Memorial Hospital and helping us protect lives through prevention, treatment, and compassionate care.
