Pakistan ranks eighth in the list of countries with a high rate of kidney diseases, with more than 17 million people suffering from such diseases. According to them, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rapidly growing in Pakistan due to late diagnosis, kidney stone disease and increasing number of patients suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. Nephrology department at Fatima Memorial Hospital is providing round the clock services to patients with kidney diseases from all walks of life.
Considering the global burden of disease and an increase in number of kidney patients all over the world as well as in Pakistan, the available resources are not enough to meet the needs of increasing number of patients day by day.
Most of the hemodialysis units including ours are working to their maximum capacity and still a long list of patients is there that are not able to find a permanent hemodialysis center due to non-availability of slots. Most of such patients unfortunately die or go from emergency to emergency in search of hemodialysis session. All such patients need to be saved and provided treatment timely.
To overcome this problem, and to help the patients in need, we at Fatima Memorial Hospital initiated a Peritoneal Dialysis (home dialysis) program which is giving patients liberty to use an alternate mode of dialysis and to overcome long waiting lists for hemodialysis. In the long run, Fatima Memorial Hospital will be able to treat a large number of patients who do not have any other option.
