Prevention of Human Trafficking in Nepal

A Follow up at Shree Praja Adharbhut School.

HIMRIGHTS Makwanpur had conducted orientation program against Human Trafficking through Art at Shree Praja Adharbhut School, Handi Khola, Manahari Rural Municipality, with 29 students from grade 6-8, 17 girls and 12 boys, June 28, 2019. HIMRIGHTS Coordinator and the Principle of this school orientated the students on what is human trafficking, definition, foreign employment-unsafe migration,  internal trafficking, exploitation including sexual in entertainment sector using pictorial education materials. The focus was on what can be the role of school and students in its prevention. The children were asked to draw their understanding of human trafficking and what they could do for its prevention for themselves and others. The process of the drawing is for their internalization of the issue to become activist and how they can share with others.

We expect to have positive and sustained impact on our participants in all our programs and in Prevention of Human Trafficking through Art. Our objective is to have a multiplier effects of and by our program participants. We look forward to our participants to internalize the importance, magnitude, and prevalence of the issue; and they take it forward. As their participation and leadership is crucial for the prevention of human trafficking, they are in the ground to make a substantial difference at individual level, not us who do not live at the grassroots level. On Nov. 22, 2019 we conducted a follow up program in the school with the same children to assess the impact on them and the activities they organized or be part of to raise the issue in larger programs. The students are doing a superb job and the principle and teachers are very impressed by our program and requested us to conduct it more frequently. In the follow up program, 12 students participated, 8 girls and 4 boys. We provided with tea and snacks to all the participants and their teachers.

The sharing by our participants of what they did and doing are very impressive, they are from community school in remote area of this district.

• The participants shared their learning and drawings of Human Trafficking and migration in their and other classes.
• In most of the Friday extracurricular activities they had talk program to raise awareness on the issue.
• Orientation of the issue through art/drawings has made it easier for them to learn and share.
• They realized they can play a major role to prevent human trafficking and unsafe migration.
• They strongly believe the orientation programs have enhanced their leadership as many of them have taken various proactive initiatives to raise the issues.
• They participated in the announcement of Child Friendly Manahari Rural Municipality and spoke on the issue.
• They participated in the local celebration of 13^th Human Trafficking and National Children’s Day. They took part in street theaters and participated in the song competition in the program with the focus against human trafficking and unsafe migration. They wrote their own dialogues and songs. They shared what they learned in the Prevention of Human Trafficking through Art from the earlier program. The Municipality along with HIMRIGHTS and other NGOs shared the cost of this celebration.
• They participated in the local National Childrens' Day with playcards against human trafficking and unsafe migration..
• They committed to be activists for the prevention and requested for additional information materials and some fund to be more effective to expand their activities.
• The particiapnts gave us permission to share their photos.

Jenisa grade 8, along with her friends Nikesh, Kanchan and Saraswoti spoke and discussed on what is human trafficking, how it occurs, how to prevent it in each Friday extracurricular activity for grade 6 and 7 in their school for 25 minutes in each class and planning to do more in other classes..  

Our activities in pipeline:

We are going to conduct orientation programs on Human Trafficking through Art in Suryodaya Madhyamic and Shree Praja Jagriti Adharbhut in February and May as they have exams before this. We will conduct follow programs too. We will include unsafe migration in all our orientation; increasingly there is thin line between trafficking and migration.
