Through our ongoing collaboration with the local Mennonite communities, Belize Karst Habitat Conservation (BKHC) has successfully prevented wildlife encroachments into the reserve throughout 2026 thus far. With Belize’s dry season now passed, and the wet season underway, the immediate risk of a wildfire breakout has reduced significantly.
However, to sustain the protection efforts, BKHC continues to maintain and service its existing firefighting equipment while actively expanding our community-led initiatives. Our primary focus moving forward is raising funds to fully outfit our dedicated community brigade with their own specialized firefighting equipment to be prepared for any spontaneous wildfire threat.
By empowering the localities with proper training and resources, we aim to build a strong, self-sustaining defense network around the reserve. Continued financial support will directly enable us to equip the brigade, ensuring swift response capabilities and permanent protection for the surrounding ecosystem.
