The rate of diagnosed, untreated Non communicable diseases (NCDs) in Uganda is alarming and accounts to 30% of the deaths. This three years project will facilitate increased access to care and prevention services of (NCDs) among grass root communities in Eastern Uganda through mobile integrated health camps in the hard to reach communities. The project will provide (Cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension, Asthma, and syphilis) screening services and health education.
Non Communicable Diseases (Cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension and syphilis) continues to be the major health problems in Uganda. The mortality rate for these four NCDs was 709 per 100,000 in males and 506 in females in 2021. Additionally, the prevalence of NCD risk factors like tobacco use and alcohol consumption is relatively high, with nearly one-fifth of adults having raised blood pressure and about 3% having diabetes. This is due to limited access to prevention and control services
This project intends to to solve the problem through: 1. Mass sensitization campaigns using radio, TV, and social media (widely accessible in Uganda) to educate on, Healthy diets (low salt, sugar, and fat), the dangers of tobacco and alcohol use, Importance of regular physical activity. 2. Train health workers to detect and manage NCDs early 3. Conduct community outreaches to extend prevention and control services to the hard to reach communities
NCDs not only affect people's health but they also negatively impact the socioeconomic development of countries by increasing the financial burden on the health system and through the loss of productivity of people who get ill or die too early. The envisaged long term project impact will include: Reduced mortally and morbidity rate, improved production among grass root communities and reduced expenditure on treatment of NCDs
