Comics to keep children safe

By Jenni Lipa | Project Director

We proudly teamed up with Cause Vision to create Phea's Story, a 28 page comic booklet that will be distributed by CCDO and Cambodia ACT and other NGO's to keep children safe.

The distribution will take place in October at the beginning f the school year and will be distributed at workshops in rural areas where most of the parents are illiiterate.

With GRATITUDE, we are fully funded for this project by private donors, however, the more funds we receive, the more books we can distribute and keep more children safe.

An outline of Phea's story, hoping to stem the tide of girls beold sld by their parent.

PHEA’s(13)  best Friend MALY (13) gets sold by her poor parents (father who does not think girls need education).. to a trafficker for her to work in a “restaurant” in Phnom Penh.

PHEA’s parents think it’s wrong to sell own children.  they believe in education, and are determined to send all their kids to finish secondary school, even though they are as poor as MALY’s family. (MESSAGE: to keep kids in school, not to sell )

PHEA likes school and has a dream to become a teacher one day.

SAMBATH, is a cousin of PHEA, who finds a job in Thailand, and leaves village with other Cambodians in the micro bus to the border.  But he ends up on the Thai fishing boat as a slave.  (WE INCLUDE “safe migration” message here )

PHEA’s sister KANHA is working in PP as a seamstress in a big garment factory. Her colleague/room mate TEVY is ‘selling her body to an older man (boyfriend) in exchange for “nice things” like mobile phone or even a scooter.  TEVY convinces KANHA to go double date with a friend of her “boyfriend”.  KANHA feeling guilty and reluctant already, however after an elegant dinner, guys take them to KTV(Beer garden), where KANHA sees MALY working as a “prostitute” .  Scared and shocked, KANHA escapes (runs away) from the KTV .  She reports what she saw to (HOTLINE 02 3720555 ).. about MALY..

Back at PHEA’s home in the village, KANHA is visiting.  Family gets together .. they are all worrying about MALY and SAMBATH.

Last scene:  SAMBATH’s fishing boat is being intercepted by Thai marine police.. (SAMBATH is being rescued)
