Food for Life Vrindavan organized International Youth Day this month for the purpose of drawing attention to youth issues. FFLV held a seminar for the 12th grade girls of Sandipani Muni School in which they were made aware about the causes, the problems and the consequences of getting married at an early age. The main objective of the session was to raise awareness about the youth issues including child marriage and how they can get all the legal help they need to fight this evil prevailing in the society.
On this day, we also invited Mansi, FFLV dance teacher ( ex-student of FFLV) and Anuradha, Teacher( ex-student of FFLV) to encourage our girls to aim high in their lives. It was an interactive session where our ex-students spoke about the basic facts, statistics, real life examples of child-marriage and the reasons why it is abolished and why it should be fought against. “It is important to empower students, our girls to come up with fresh ideas and implement them for the betterment of society”, said Anuradha.
We also took this opportunity to conduct a survey in which we found out that 67.5% of the girls know a girl/ girls who have been married under 18 years of age( 18 is the legal age for the girls to get married in India). We also found out that 77.5% of the girls feel that the right age to get married should be between 20 to 25, whereas 17.5% feel it should be either at 26 or after that and 0.8% girls feel it should be between 16 to 19. This gives us an insight into the depth of this practice even in this day and age.
FFLV's Girls' Fund is a preventive mesaure that has saved a lot of girls from early marriage & pregnancy. $5 of your monthly contribution accumulates to a reasonable amount as a guarantee to the parents, for the girls's future. The total amount is given to the girl at the end of her education. At that point, the student has already reached enough maturity to make her life decisions.
