May 2019: Guyana Women's Health Program

By Jeremy Writt | Fundraising Specialist

Remote Area Medical’s most recent expedition to Guyana as part of its Women’s Health Program was highly successful. RAM sent a team of staff and volunteers led by Vicki Gregg, (RAM Clinic Manager), Jordann Loehr (OB/GYN), and Jacqui Doran (RN) on a 13-day trip that resulted in 1,857 patients receiving much-needed care. The team’s efforts included three women having successful surgeries in Georgetown. From March 24 through April 5, the RAM team provided $128,415 in total value of care. Many women were able to receive services like pelvic exams, biopsies, and Pap tests to which they simply would not otherwise have access.

The treatment and prevention of cervical cancer is a critical element of RAM’s Guyana Women’s Health Program. Guyana has the third highest rate of cervical cancer in the Western Hemisphere is the second poorest country in the region with 36.6% of the population living in absolute poverty. The Amerindian population in Guyana is the most impoverished segment of this population and many indigenous women have died from cervical cancer.  RAM and its volunteers treat women and children who are in dire need of basic healthcare services. Supporting this program undoubtedly directly improves and extends the lives of thousands.
