Remote Area Medical is gearing up for its first women's health expedition in Guyana since the late 2000s! Long-time RAM volunteers Jordann Loehr (OB/GYN) and Jacqui Doran (RN) have assemebled a team of practitioners who will travel to Guyana and serve women and children in need of healthcare services from March 23 and April 6.
Guyana is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 36.6% of the population living in absolute poverty. The country also has the third highest rate of cervical cancer in the Western Hemisphere. The Amerindian population in Guyana is the most impoverished and many indigenous women have died from cervical cancer. RAM and its volunteers expect to treat hundreds of women and children who are in need of basic healthcare services, as well as treatment and prevention of cervical cancer.
Going forward, RAM expects to return to Guyana twice per year to operate its women's health program and serve women and girls in need.
