Support for Sandy Victims

By Catherine Wieczorek | Development Coordinator

Shortly after Hurricane Sandy hit our area, Interfaith Neighbors established a Sandy Relief Fund for victims and their families. Although many of the families affected would be eligible for reimbursement from thier insurance companies and FEMA, many others were not so lucky, especially low-income families or renters who may not have had insurance. Many hourly workers lost wages as a result of the storm, with businesses closed for up to two weeks or more, and with travel remaining treacherous. Interfaith Neighbors was there in the immediate aftermath, and will continue to be there for many months to come as families slowly rebuild their homes and their lives.

One family came to us in desperate need of assistance. A husband and wife with five children were living in an apartment infested with mold as a result of the storm. They were able to find a new home and Interfaith Neighbors assisted them with the security deposit. The family is now healthy and well, and they are most grateful for the assistance.

We continue to hear stories like this every day, and we will support our communities as we all continue to recover from the storm.
