We wish to bring to your kind information that our interventions have been continuing in the disaster prone (flood prone) areas of Chennai city which have the heavy concentrations of the poorest still one of the most voluminous sections, the slum dwellers. This year as the North East Monsoon rains are about to set in October, the poor communities in the slums flood prone areas of Chennai here are really in a state of acute fear.
Upon our findings based on field experiences we had gone ahead with the Disaster Preparedness for the vulnerable sections as one of the very crucial initiatives. This is because we strongly believe that disaster preparedness not only mitigates the loss of lives and the humble possessions of the hapless sections, but also quickens the process of recovery. With many parts of Chennai, especially the communities belonging to the vast slum settlements being the most vulnerable sections we have been focussing on the many parts of Teynampet region in Chennai city
As you are aware as part of Disaster Preparedness initiatives, Sensitization, Strengthening different caretaker groups with training , co-ordination, and Networking with government and other private players on disaster management are being carried out. School children, the people living with disabilities , senior citizens have been made disaster ready with various training inputs including mock demos that depict the disaster scenario. Disaster Mitigation Clubs have been formed in various schools here. We have been covering a good part of Teynampet with these initiatives of follow up activities.
But the neighbouring Saidapet region, supposed to be one of the areas in the city with very huge population of poor slum dwellers located in the low lying areas of the city stands at a big risk. With copious rains to be brought in by the oceanic depressions being forecast, the vulnerable communities of the slums this particular locality needs to be made Disaster Prepared on a war footing. This shall certainly bring down the number of casualties in terms of life and properties.
With the massive scale of work to be carried out to keep the communities belonging to the slums here prepared to face imminent calamities (cyclonic floods are frequent), we are badly in need of your support. Hence we will update the Global Giving platform to allow us to alter our page in accordance with the requirements concerning Mitigation of losses through Disaster preparedness.
