Society for Poor People Development (SPPD) has been working in the disaster affected poor slum habitations since the heavily disastrous deluge that shook the city of Chennai in the year 2015. During the floods even the apartments in which economically much better placed families had met with enormous hardships, for weeks as the water submerged even the first two floors in some low lying areas.
And the sufferings of the poorest communities, who live in the hundreds of slum settlements was unthinkable indeed. SPPD stepped in immediately. As part of rehabilitation huts were given supporting structures like frames of comprising of bamboo and casuarinas poles along with reinforced thick polythene sheets as a protection from the rain. Subsequent to this Disaster Preparedness training is being carried out.
The young woman one of the beneficiaries of the rehabilitation and disaster preparedness training from Thiru. V.Ka Kudyiruppu of Teynampet slum settlement, says that the sheets were very large enough as with them the entire area of the house of the roof and the side walls remained covered, preventing even a drop from leaking in. She also explains how the Emergency Medical kit given as part of disaster preparedness training by SPPD greatly helped an old man, her neighbour.
She says when he got injured with bleeding wound while walking on the muddy surroundings. She at once cleaned and bandaged the wound with the help of the cotton and the medicine provided in the emergency medical kit. Similarly she could also nurse the wounds sustained by her son. And after the initial relief and rehabilitation efforts, we have been involved in the crucial measures that are meant to protect the damages to the lives of the most vulnerable sections like the children, disabled, aged and women of the slums here.
The prevention of damage to the tiny shacks of the poor families are residing is another utmost priority. Upon realising the same we attach utmost importance on that. Disaster Preparedness is carried out as a continuous intervention by SPPD in association with GlobalGiving and Red Cross in the slums here .
