Thank you for your kind support for our project titled “ Prepare 10000 people to face disaster in Chennai” implemented with the assistance of Global Giving.
As per the government’s plan these vulnerable people are evicted and relocated in places far away from their traditional habitations which were are situated adjacent to their sources of their livelihood. The men of the families who were living in the low lying flood prone localities were taking up fishing and other jobs such as construction labor etc taking place within the confines of the city.
And a vast majority of the women were working as domestic helps in the apartments of the city of Chennai. But now the members of these communities most of whom, the indigenous and the original inhabitants of the sprawling metropolitan city of Chennai are moved out of their habitations for the purpose of facilitating industrial and other allied development activities.
Thousands of families have been relocated in the far away suburbs like “Kannagi Nagar” that are well over 25 kilometers away from their original habitations. Apart from many hardships that have been caused by the resettlement at faraway places, the members of these families including the children have been forced to face multifarious problems.
The new living conditions have led to quite a number of socio- economic impediments. These problems have to be addressed before they assume catastrophic proportions. And hence SPPD has been taking up a need assessment survey in the new settlements. We shall inform you about the findings of the survey once it is completed. On concluding the communication, we again wish to thank Global Giving and all the individual donors for the assistance extended for the project.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
