In continuation to our project activities at Chennai with the support of donors , the activities carried out are been updated.
The residence of Giriyappa road , a slum of Teynampet , Chennai , covers around 300 lined households, of which 100 are asbestos roofed while the remaining are thatched houses. The houses are single roomed (approx.75 to 100 sq.ft.) and have poor living conditions. The room has to be used for all domestic purposes like cooking, sleeping and cleaning vessels. They do not have proper drainage facilities. The houses with asbestos roofing are provided with a toilet for every 8 households, whereas the thatched houses are provided with two common toilets which again are poorly structured. As far as drinking water is concerned they are provided with common corporation taps. Major occupation comprises of housekeeping, construction labourers, and painters.
Their immediate need was cooking stoves and utensils. We are distributing stoves to the residents of this locality. The highlighted feature of this stove is that it is carbon emission free, smokeless and doesn’t pollute the environment. Provision of kitchen utensils to these residents will be distributed in the next following weeks.
Besides, they are given an orientation programme and the points of discussion were on the various emergency preparedness aspects to be handle during disaster period, the relief measures provided by the Government and how to approach them, the formalities involved in retrieving legal documents like certificates, ration card, etc.
We will keep you updated with the various activities we reach out in the days ahead.
