Last year, the Ready Golf Caddies camp hosted more than 20 students from Maryland and the District of Columbia. Among those students were Niko and Tyrin. Niko, a first-generation college student, is on his way to college with scholarships and Tyrin, who came to the program seeking a mentor, is performing at the top of his 10th grade class. This program allows underserved children to increase their confidence, reach their goals, and explore new environments that were once inaccessible to them.
Each year, the Afterschool Alliance reveals that there is an increasing demand for afterschool programs that remains unmet. In Maryland, there is a 16-percent participation rate in afterschool programs and 66 percent of children in DC would be enrolled in an afterschool program if one were available. Another major obstacle to afterschool programs is the cost. RGA provides a yearround, free alternative to the average afterschool and summer programs available to children in MD and DC.
Ready Golf Academy, through the Ready Golf Caddies program, introduces underserved boys to golf, new environments, people, and opportunities that are generally inaccessible to them. We provide summer activities, mentoring, academic and personal development, and college planning assistance. During the summer months, students work as caddies, working for golfers at various golf tournaments, receive golf lessons, compete for scholarship awards, and participate in community service activities.
This summer, Ready Golf Academy will provide summer activities to 50 children from Maryland and the District of Columbia, filling the absence of meaningful and affordable afterschool and summer programs. These children will be connected with mentors who have the potential to guide them toward productive futures, will improve their social competency, and will increase their overall confidence in their ability to make their dreams come to fruition.
