ARUD Agrotech a "plug and play" modular, solar-powered walk-in cold room, for 24/7 off-grid storage and preservation of perishable foods that addresses the problem of post- harvest losses in fruits, vegetables and other perishable food. The cold storage will be installed in farms and market places so that farmers place their produce in clean plastic crates that are stacked inside the cold room. This extends the freshness of fruits, vegetables and other perishables from 2 to about 21 days.
Uganda faces significant challenges with food spoilage before it reaches the market. According to the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) , an estimated 30% to 50% of the annual grain and fresh fruits and vegetables harvest is lost due to poor post harvest handling practices. This translates to a sustainable portion of Uganda's food production being spoiled before it even reaches consumers due to poor drying and storage practices, infrastructural and limited access to cold storage facilities.
The project will reduce spoilage by controlling the temperature, maintain a consistent refrigerated temperature, slowing down the spoilage process and keeping produce fresh for long, humidity control as the cold room's humidity control system helps to maintain optimal humidity levels preventing moisture related spoilage. In addition the project will lead to increased storage capacity by extending storage period with cold room, farmers and traders can store produce for long periods.
Improved food security and nutrition, the project will contribute to improved food security and nutrition by storing perishable produce, the project will help to ensure a steady supply of nutritious food throughout the year and even during times of scarcity thus SDGs No: 2 Zero hunger. The project will promote environmental sustainability by reducing food waste and improving the efficiency of the produce supply chain, mitigate the environmental impacts of food production & transportation.
