Dear friend,
Today, I'm happy to bring you the uplifting journey of Esther, a vibrant young mother from Rwanda whose life has been transformed since joining BRAC initiatives. Like countless women across the globe, Esther faced incredible challenges early in life. With her resilience and determination, and supported by our women empowerment programs, Esther has created a hopeful path forward. Thanks to generous BRAC supporters, mothers like Esther are rising above poverty.
In the village of Muti in Rwanda's Huye district, Esther experienced a significant change when she became a mother at age 19.
“I was this ball of anger, always looking at the world through gloomy glasses,” Esther shared. “Being a young mom brought a storm into my life, and I was ready for some sunshine.”
Esther first encountered a BRAC staff member who introduced her to an initiative called AIM, short for Accelerating Impact for Young Women. Describing it as a beacon of hope, Esther joined the project and with an open heart and shared her life story.
Inspired by her story, the team encouraged Esther to consider joining one of BRAC’s youth empowerment clubs to develop her work and life skills. She eagerly signed up.
The club promised a sanctuary where Esther could learn and grow alongside peers facing similar struggles.
During her second club meeting, a lesson on the “tree of life” resonated deeply with Esther. The metaphor compares a person to a tree shedding its leaves in tough conditions — the wind is too strong or the weather is bad. But those fallen leaves become the fertilizer that makes the tree grow. “Something clicked in me that day,” remembers Esther. “I felt the weight lift, and suddenly, I wasn't just a tree battered by storms: I was a tree that could turn its leaves into something beautiful.”
Today, Esther continues to be an active and enthusiastic participant in the girls’ empowerment club. She says that the club has made her feel good about herself and compassion for everyone around her. More than just a place to learn life skills, it’s “a place to genuinely have a good time.” Esther has found her place in this community that nurtures her growth, much like the nourishing soil that supports a tree. Her transformation is a testament to the power of community and support systems.
“Life may have thrown some unexpected seeds my way, but with the right environment and support, even those seeds can turn into something beautiful.” — Esther
Esther's story is one of many mothers who have changed their own lives. She reminds us that with tools, opportunities, and skills, women can lift themselves out of poverty and achieve their full potential.
