The project overall objective is to improve the health of orphans and children living with HIV through promoting community/home based incomes and nutritional education and care through poultry farming.
Kabalore District Annual Report for FY 2007/2008, many children are dying of nutritional related illnesses. The prevalence of stunted growth of children in Kabalore district is reported to be over 40%, underweight 15.7% and wasting 3.4% (Uganda MOH 2013). Therefore, malnutrition is a major problem leading to poor health of orphans and children living with HIV.
YAWE Foundation will establish a hatchery and a demonstration Poultry farm and this farm will breed chicks which will be crossed between the local chicken and exotic chicken to produce more disease resistant breeds which will then be donated to the youth to establish their own poultry farms at house hold level for both income and nutrition from the eggs and the sale of the mature chicken.
There will be improved nutrition and incomes among the children and youth living with HIV at house hold level. The skills in poultry farming will imparted to the beneficiaries and the entire community. The beneficiaries will use the incomes from poultry products to re-invest in other income generating activities like growing of crops hence creating an improved standard of living among families and communities.
