Thank You for 15 New Teacher Training Scholarships

Nabo, a GlobalGiving scholarship recipient
Nabo, a GlobalGiving scholarship recipient

As the school year begins in Burkina Faso, we extend our sincere Thank You to our GlobalGiving partners.  Your generous donations this past year have made it possible for 15 young village women in Burkina Faso to enter primary school teacher training this fall.  The selections have been made by Association NEEED and the Ministry of Education and the young teacher trainees are about to embark on their professional training.

We are proud that all but one of the 56 recipients of Friends of Burkina Faso/GlobalGiving scholarships in the past four years have successfully completed their training or are currently in training.  Proper selection of qualified and motivated young village women!

Nabo, who just completed her second year of primary school teacher training, explains what this primary teacher training consists of.  The first year of training includes educational theory and pedagogy applied to primary school education in French, math, earth science, life science and physical education; educational psychology; professional ethics; laws governing primary school education; and a dissertation.

The second year of training focuses on practice in the classroom. The trainee is assigned to a primary school and spends the year in all six grades: 1) observing classroom teachers teaching their classes, and 2) putting into practice their own knowledge gained from their first year of instruction and from their observations of teachers.

At the end of training, students take a comprehensive exam in order to be certified, followed by a civil service exam in order to be hired by the government.

Nabo describes her two years of training as a very positive experience and thanks Friends of Burkina Faso/GlobalGiving donors for making it possible.  She looks forward to being assigned to a primary school this fall and to being able to assist her family financially.

On behalf of our scholarship recipients, we thank you for your past and continued support for the postsecondary education of these deserving young women.
