Post secondary Education for Girls in Burkina Faso

From the director of Association NEEED in Burkina: “In most of our towns and rural areas of northern Burkina Faso, the number of girls who abandon their studies is growing.  More and more, capable young women drop out of school in search of money to pay for their most basic needs.  They work in very unsafe conditions in gold mines, as nannies and some resort to prostitution.

We have done small studies to discern the principal causes of girls dropping out of school.  Poverty is the principal reason.   Farming families in particular are unable to ensure adequate food for their families much less support the education of their children. 

It is in recognition of this rising school dropout rate among girls in our region, and our commitment to strengthen local development in Burkina, that we offer, with the support of our GlobalGiving partners, very basic postsecondary scholarships to qualified girls from the most impoverished families.  These scholarships are in the fields of primary school teaching, nursing and midwifery.
