This project will fund a portable ultrasound device for a maternity hospital in Tirana. Ultrasonography is used for disease detection, assisting in taking biopsies, monitoring previously diagnosed abnormalities, and evaluating pregnancy. It also plays a crucial role in women's health by changing the management of early pregnancy, and it provides a safer, clearer and more accurate understanding of women's health issues, from early pregnancy scans to critical breast health assessments.
The main maternity hospital in Tirana, Albania does not have a portable ultrasound unit that can be moved around according to the needs. Therefore, doctors do not have the information they need to quickly and accurately diagnose a health concern.
It will primarily be used in the womens' center where women come for gynecological examinations, breast exams, and pregnancy checks. However, because of its portability, it can also be used when needed on the neonatal intensive care ward, and in obstetrics where there is no ultrasound device. The portable ultrasound will be available to be used to help diagnose up to 16,000 patients in one year, allowing treatment to be focused and effective.
The long-term impact will be seen as anomolies in health are detected early on. In pregnancies, doctors will be able to diagnose problems with the mother and baby early enough to do something to preserve the health of both. During "Pink October" the ultrasound will be used to keep up with the larger flow women coming in for breast exams. This will aid in diagnosing cancer at earlier stages, thus contributing to a better health outcome.
