GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A 22-year-old male patient diagnosed with moderate ASD, with greater involvement in expressive language, emotional regulation and executive functions, which limit his independent development in different contexts. Which after the death of his mother (primary caregiver), the socio-economic deprivation that the country presents and the confinement after the pandemic, a decrease in cognitive function was evidenced, losing basic skills such as processing speed, sustained attention and shared, imitation, inhibition, flexibility and sequencing; requiring greater assistance from his main caregiver (elderly father).
THERAPEUTIC OBJECTIVES
Preserve basic academic skills through curricular adaptations and psychopedagogical support in the classroom.
Establish augmentative communication system to increase the intention of communication and joint attention.
Decrease in heteroaggressiveness episodes and increase cognitive flexibility.
Offer support space to the father as an exclusive caregiver figure, to contribute to his physical and psychological health.
Increase repertoires of complex behaviors within the skills of daily life as self-care habits.
EVOLUTION
Upon joining the psychoeducational and therapeutic program of our institution, Miguel found a space and a stable dynamic that reduced the levels of anxiety and irritability generated by the lack of stimulation caused by socioeconomic deprivation and confinement; which, when incorporated into the routine with the TEACCH methodology, brought as a favorable consequence the restoration of basic life cycles such as the circadian rhythm, decreased emotional dysregulation and risk behaviors.
Likewise, the probability of developing a comorbidity of mood typical of young adulthood, added to contextual conditions, stopped with stimulation in the different conventional therapies (OT. TL. Psychopedagogy and psychology) in addition to significant experiences of learning such as sports, recreation, artistic workshops and audiovisual leisure activities; which favors the preservation of cognitive abilities achieved.
SYNTHESIS
Since the beginning of the individualized interdisciplinary program within Autism Leave a Footprint, Miguel has managed to reduce behavioral excesses and mood swings, minimizing the risk of accidents for himself and his caregiver, as well as the damage caused to his home in an episode of behavioral crises. These advances strengthened the parental bond, allowing the father to recover from his emotional exhaustion and offering opportunities for healthy and harmonious coexistence within the daily dynamics; in turn reducing the chances of evolving into a comorbidity of mood. Therefore, his permanence within the therapeutic program is essential to contribute to the maintenance of his cognitive and emotional resources.
