Summary

The Sierra Tarahumara is a mountain range with a series of deep ravines in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico; where the Raramuri people (foot runners) struggle against different forms of violence and discrimination that have affected their way of life. Engaging the people with their identity, helping them exercise their rights while respecting their own ways, is a way towards building peace in the Tarahumaras. Join the effort.

Challenge

The raramuri communities have identified a weakening of their cultural identity; meaning, their customs and traditions. This is enhanced by the violence, cultural impositions and structural discrimination from which they suffer. Particularly, it's been the girls, boys and teens who have been the most affected; This has been seen with their decrease of participation in parties, community activities, use of the language and link to their land and region.

Solution

As a community initiative, the Cultural Centers are a pedagogical proposal that, along with children and teenagers, promote the appropriation of the raramuri language, community life and identity, and the care of the land. Promoting the value of the dialogue in the spread of their traditions; the furtherance and recovery of their celebrations and music; the participation in community organization and work, helping the dialogue with the mestizo world and the peace culture.

Long-Term Impact

With the increased participation of children, and the appropriation and integration of their culture, a greater involvement of families in community spaces is accomplished, maintaining more fraternal and dignified relationships; which can be reflected in their way of life, their connection with nature, their spirituality and in a dialogue with the different thoughts and views on the world. This way, they can face a reality of pain, violence and exclusion, with their steps towards building peace.
