We will buy sanitary pads and give them to 1000 girls poor urban school of Kampala-Uganda. The number of girls dropping out of school by the time we developed this project was high due to stigma around menstruation, limited support to menstrual hygiene knowledge and materials access. With our intervention, numbers of girls in the schools increased tremendously. Our objective is to eliminate menstrual stigma, increase girl child numbers in school as well as manifesting a dignified menstruation
The challenge is that girls are dropping out of school due to lack of sanitary pads, limited knowledge about menstruation as well as stigma around menstruation. In fact, research done by Build Africa has shown that Uganda has one of the highest number of girls dropping out of school because of this. There is also a knowledge gap, and no teaching about menstruation at school. There are therefore lots of myths, stigma and taboos around menstruation and periods in Uganda.
By doing outreach at schools, we will perform educational sessions to improve menstruation Knowledge, break taboos around menstruation and distribute sanitary pads to girls 8400 girls.
By doing outreaches at schools, we hope to make an impact by changing attitudes. The school pupils will get new knowledge and spread the information to their families and friends. Teachers will learn to effectively integrate menstruation education in their youth work and the young people too, both girls and boys shall be the custodians of the menstruation in their schools. The long-term impact is that girls will stay long in school, reduce early pregnancies, be informed and gain confidence.
