"It was one day, when the bad news of the lockdown clocked into our ears while at school, the schools are closing, this sounded like a joke, true to us as children, we could not believe it, but for sure it happened." Daphine our programs Assistant at UYSTO quoted Sarah saying.

In our last sanitary pads distribution event, I looked at these poor children with their innocence and rely got touched more, the pandemic has not only affected the economies of the world, but individually too, most specially the children and the women.

The situation looked worse with these girl's daily living life but nothing much that can be done without the intervention of the children activists, donors and the well-wishers. Thank you very much to all those who have managed to donate even in this economic crisis. The children through, Uganda Youth Skills Training Organization and GlobalGiving, do appreciate your support towards their well being.

During the distribution of the pads, we noticed other challenges, these included:

Using of the handkerchiefs as their masks, some came along with their parents also requesting for sanitary pads, masks, soap among others. This indicated to us that people are rely badly-off, need COVID-19 relief, looked like meeting the basic needs was something that could not be dreamt of soon.

Similarly, on the day of the sanitary pads distribution, we conducted a counselling session and we noticed a lot from these young girls, some were tricked into things like: I will be buying food, sanitary pads, masks to your family as this disease kills people without all those and you will be my girl friend, this is the only way you support your family as a girl. This put many girls into problems, as it was found out that some got pregnant through such tricks.

We were also able along side the distribution of sanitary pads, to distribute 5 masks to each girl who had come to pick the menstrual products. Help is seriously needed in all areas of relief. The analysis made from this, is that the period poverty is combining with survival poverty to cripple the success of humanity in life.

In this Covid, time, we have not only supported the girls with menstrual products but also involved them in some sports activities and sharing of other life experiences. The project was increased from 5o to 500 beneficiaries and this included in the UYSTO training centre teen girls as beneficieries too.

Girls sung the song, “long live UYSTO, GlobalGiving and Our beloved Donors, you rely matter a lot to us

UYSTO message to our donors, thank you very much for all that long you have trusted us to be the link to your support to the poor urban girl child in the Universal Primary Education in Uganda though us,Uganda Youth Skills Training Organization, friends of the humanity and source of opportunities.

Donation message: Children are back to school, they still need your support, kindly continue donating for the next distribution phase, which will take place in early December 2020.

Like any other way COVID-19 had affected the rest of the organizational programs, UYSTO too has been affected not only in the Donate sanitary pads to 500 schoolgirls in Uganda but other projects like Vocational and entrepreneurship skills training and Period empowerment network projects.

It was 18th March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic locked was manifested which left everything in Uganda paralyzed, schools, ministries, public and private offices closed. It is from this time that our project Donate sanitary pads to 500 schoolgirls in Uganda also stopped and left everything in suspense.

The beneficiaries were based at a school, Namungona Kigobe primary school and we never had a chance to interact with them as there was no a prior warning to us that everything would-be put-on halt by then. It was a hijacking decision by His Excellency the President of Uganda to impose the lockdown and no way we could make the beneficiaries interact with us for COVID-19 lockdown holiday follow-ups. However, several individual calls have been made to us requesting for the support but due to everything being on standstill, has affected our meet up with those individual girls. As if this situation has not been enough, pupils have also got more other issues concerning economic situations experienced as a result of their guardians not having sources of income leading constants domestic violence that do not only affect the parents/guardians but the students too.

Three of the of students we have been supporting have got pregnant during COVID-19 and parents not able to look after them. all this worsened the girls'' situation that might result in other prolonged high levels of vulnerability. This is a challenging moment that we cannot be in a position to even reach out with counselling to them.

Our volunteer coordinator has started riding a bicycle reaching out with menstrual products we buying from funds fundraiser locally, each staff at UYSTO has agreed to offer $6 from their salaries to make sure that girls are provided with sanitary pads, this started with the month of May 2020.

GlobalGiving and our donors have taken long supporting us and if there is a way that our donors you can resume to donating, we request you to right away click the donation links and come for the support to these girls, it's in this situation of COVID-19 that we seriously need your extra support

The year 2019 ended and with all our donors, we say bravo bravo for the great support you rendered to us for reaching out to the needy young people.

We rely appreciated your kind support to us when you accepted our proposal of helping the vulnerable young people and became the most kind humanitarians in handling issues that affect world future young generation for a better living. Your support through GlobalGiving, impacts the lives of the needy one in our areas of interventions.

We have through this project, acquired a project from European union, had it not been this project " Donate sanitary pads to 50 school girls in Uganda" it wouldn’t have been possible to have this project " PEN https://skillsforyouths.org/PERIOD-EmpowermentNetwork.html (Period Empowerment Network) . We have acquired more knowledge through this PEN project as its now adding a value to our services, not only to distribute the pads but also rich with information concerning Menstrual hygiene management and educating the beneficiaries on how best they can break the taboos, myths and stigma around menstruation.

We have also managed to train senior women of the beneficiary community, ( school ) such that the information concerning their children with menstruation is at their finger tips.

The project's impact has led to the best ranking of the school as among those in the neighboring schools due to meeting the girl child needs in menstruation hygiene.

Parents have also become responsible, previously parents have not been minding about their children, but our project working as model project, inspired other parents to provide sanitary pads and knowledge to their children in areas of managing their menses.

The project has also acquired a lot of visibility from other partners handling the same issues and this is leading to formation of youth menstrual management activist groups http://imkacdo-ug.org/  mentored by Uganda Youth Skills Training Organization.

Due to the involvement of boys, in the distribution of pads, a lot of sense of responsibility has grown towards being part of the menstruation process and its related issues.

The same project in 2020 has been transformed from reaching out to 50 girls to 500 girls under GG 2020 girl fund campaign, we still need your support in meeting your goals through us as your ambassadors of helping the needy ones.

Greetings from here Uganda, the pearl of Africa. Good news that we were able to host a Global giving representative (Leena Elseed) here at our Organization. Her visitation backed our activities a lot, we were able to reduce on the loads specially on engagement and effectiveness. She was taken to the field and she was able to interact with the beneficiaries direct at their centers. Girl and teachers appreciated the work done by Global giving.

She guided us and showed us how effectively we can engage with Global giving and benefit much out of it. In spite of what is mentioned above, regards the opportunities of hosting the special person from Global giving, we have not been able to donate sanitary pads due to having taken long without hearing from our beloved donors. This rely has been a test before the us as the conduit to the support to your daughters. We have received several call phones from both the school administration and the parents asking what happened to the project and our response is we are still fundraising. And indeed, we are fundraising for the project.

When the situation worsened, we tried to contact Global giving about the situation and told us that our treasury in Global giving was not doing well and that we need to wait until we raise what is required to be sent.

We also noticed that our donors forget about the promotions that global giving put as events to share what they have as a matching funds but when donated to a certain amount of money by the donors. These campaigns are regarded as the best practices by global giving projects to fast collect a lot for their effective continuous project’s implementation. We do not rely know why our donors don't get involved in such campaigns but maybe we have not yet learnt well on promoting the campaigns among them, but if it’s our issue I think together with my team, we shall address it.

Our sincere appreciation goes to you our beloved donors for the continuous support and love you have showed us all this long in spite of hiccups experienced during the project implementation and resources mobilization. We know that the economy is not always friendly but you have been able to be with us.

Your support has a strong impact in our community and we still request you to be with all the time, it has been noticed that among the girls who did well in Primary Leaving Examination in the 2018 year, were those that you have been supporting. This is every strong achievement for your support.

Be blessed all of you our world friends and we miss you all.

Students who benefit from your support
Students who benefit from your support

First and foremost, allow me to say that " thank you our beloved donors" for the love, kind and support you are rendering to a girl child. We rely appreciate your support.

Since last time we delivered the sanitary pads to the girls on , we have since then not been able to donate to due to having not received the funds from GlobalGiving, if you donate to us, we also provide support but this quarter, we have not got any support, may be due the strained economies.

All our GlobalGiving support is accounted on you, when you donate to us, we also deliver your kind support to your friends.

The good news to you is that the best students in the year 2018 in the Primary Leaving Examination, organized by UNEB (Uganda National Examination Board) at school level, were among those you supported. And the girls include, Shamim, Tracy, Doreen and Eva. And one (Aida) of our pioneer beneficiaries in receiving your sanitary pads support, has joined us at UYSTO for vocational and entrepreneurship skills training programs.

We are happy that we shall host a GlobalGiving representative Miss. Leena El Seed into our organization on 26th June 2019 and we shall be able to host her at the school. She will meet and interact with the beneficiaries.

Wishing you best and looking forward for your continued support
