Empowering Orphaned Girls Through Education

By Mohamud Hassan Ali | Project Leader

Dear Esteemed Donors,

Warm greetings from the Humanitarian Relief and Development Council (HRDC)!

We are delighted to share another encouraging update on our project, "Educational Support for Orphaned Girls in Somalia." Thanks to your continued generosity and commitment, 20 orphaned girls continue to access quality education, mentorship, and the support they need to build brighter futures.

Your support is making a lasting difference in the lives of girls who might otherwise be excluded from educational opportunities.

Project Update (February – May 2026)

During this reporting period, HRDC continued to focus on educational continuity, academic excellence, personal development, and safeguarding for all 20 beneficiaries.

1. Sustained School Attendance and Retention

We are pleased to report that:

  • All 20 girls remained enrolled and actively attending school.
  • No school dropouts were recorded during the reporting period.
  • Regular coordination was maintained with schools and guardians to monitor attendance and academic progress.
  • Beneficiaries demonstrated strong commitment to their studies despite ongoing economic challenges affecting their households.

2. Academic Progress and Examination Support

To help students prepare for their end-of-term assessments, HRDC provided:

  • Examination preparation materials and study guides.
  • Additional academic coaching for students requiring extra support.
  • Learning materials including notebooks, pens, and educational supplies.

As a result:

  • Several girls demonstrated improved performance in mathematics, science, and language subjects.
  • Eight beneficiaries achieved positions among the top-performing students in their classes.
  • Teachers reported increased classroom participation and improved learning confidence.

3. Career Guidance and Mentorship Activities

One of the highlights of this quarter was the organization of a career guidance and mentorship session for the girls.

Topics covered included:

  • Career planning and goal setting.
  • The importance of education for girls.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Building self-confidence and resilience.

The girls interacted with female role models from the community who shared their educational and professional journeys, inspiring participants to pursue their ambitions with determination.

4. Child Protection and Well-being Monitoring

HRDC continued its commitment to safeguarding and protection through:

  • Regular home visits and follow-up meetings with guardians.
  • Monitoring of school attendance and welfare concerns.
  • Strengthening awareness on child protection and girls' rights.

These efforts have helped create a supportive environment where beneficiaries can continue learning safely and confidently.

Impact Story

One of the girls supported by the project, now in secondary school, recently achieved one of the highest examination scores in her class. Having lost both parents at a young age, she once believed that continuing her education would be impossible.

Today, she dreams of becoming a medical doctor and helping vulnerable communities in Somalia. Her determination and progress demonstrate the life-changing impact of sustained educational support and mentorship.

Challenges

While significant progress has been achieved, several challenges remain:

  • Rising educational costs, including school materials and transportation.
  • Economic hardship among guardians and caregivers.
  • Limited access to digital learning tools and internet connectivity.
  • Increasing requests from additional orphaned girls seeking support through the project.

Despite these challenges, your support continues to ensure that the current beneficiaries remain in school and continue progressing toward their goals.

Looking Ahead (June – September 2026)

In the next phase of the project, HRDC plans to:

  • Continue educational support for all 20 orphaned girls.
  • Provide school materials for the upcoming academic term.
  • Expand mentorship and life-skills development activities.
  • Explore opportunities for digital learning support.
  • Mobilize resources to increase the number of beneficiaries in future project phases.

A Heartfelt Thank You

On behalf of the girls, their families, and the entire HRDC team, we extend our sincere gratitude to all GlobalGiving donors and supporters.

Your generosity is providing much more than education—it is restoring hope, building confidence, and creating opportunities for vulnerable girls to achieve their dreams.

Together, we are helping shape a future where every girl has the chance to learn, thrive, and contribute positively to her community.

With heartfelt appreciation,
