School Rehabilitation & Maintenance Program

Unfortunately due to the COVID 19 crisis our school maintenance and projects are on hold temporarily. All of our resources have been shifted towards supporting families throughout this crisis. This includes the families of many of our students locally. Our goal is to ensure their basic needs are being met throughout this medical and economic crisis. We are currently supporting 120 families with a regular supply of provisions (rice, beans, oil, etc.) plus soaps, sanitizers and masks. We hope to get back to our school projects again soon. Unfortunately the schools do reman open locally but very few students are attending right now.

Thanks

Well the world has certainly changed since our last report. Unfortunately as we grapple with COVID19 all of our schools are temporarily closed down. However we did have a chance to complete some maintenance works at our high school in early February. Phase 1 of the high school maintenance project included the installation of new walkways and we also painted about 2/3s of the high school. The balance was to be painted in early April with the help of a YMCA group but this is indefinitely on hold for now.

Phase 1 was completed by a mix of international volunteers and 5th year high school students. Thanks to all for your donations and support which allowed us to take on this project.

Hello,

We are now in our school maintenance season but will be operating with a limited bugdet this year. We have recently completed some minor repair works and painting at the local elementary school in El Manzano Uno. We will also be undertaking Phase 1 of our High School improvement plan the first week of February.

Phase One

The back portion of the school yard is a high traffic area that is dry and dusty in the dry season and muddy in the wet season. The toilets in back are in need of repair and painting, while the main footway area could really use some walkways, planting and repair.

The school restrooms are also in need of repair and maintenance including repainting, replacing broken water pipes from the cistern to the tank and from the tank to the hand-washing area, and replacing the handwashing sink. There is also a need to build stairs at the south west end of the new classrooms building.

Total Estimated Budget for Phase One Project: 80,000 cordoba ($2,462 USD)

Our next report will feature photos and updates from this work.

Thanks for your ongoing and generous support!

We are gearing up for some improvements to the Waves of Hope High School which will be completed in January and early February of 2020. Lately we have been focused on our fundraising efforts for this project and recentlywe held a Waves of Hope Bazaar in Ottawa. The event raised over $3000 CAD in support of our project and the group who coordinated the fundraiser will be visiting us this February to help out with the improvements.

Phase Two Service Retreat – Outdoor Plaza / Recess Seating Area

The second phase of the Manzanillo High School improvement project is a proposal to construct an outdoor plaza seating area. As most of the school grounds is open dirt, the majority of the outdoor areas are dusty in dry season and muddy in the wet season. We hope that by constructing an outdoor area using the same blocks as the walkways we will be able to reduce the amount of mud and dirt that is tracked throughout the school and provide an aesthetically appealing area for social congregation, studying and lunch breaks. The trees in this part of the school provide a natural shaded area that is currently not being utilized.

Total Phase 2 Estimated Cost: 110,000 (3,385 USD)

As of right now, Waves of Hope does not have any ongoing school rehab projects underway as we are in the middle of the school year and try to avoid disruption through construction works if it can be avoided. We did however recently update some of the high school roof which had some leaks and are planning for a much larger high school improvement program this winter.
