An Arboretum has been growing in a peri-urban area for a couple of years! Does this concept sound familiar to you? It is a type of garden in which many types of trees and other woody plants are grown to form a living collection, mainly focused on conservation, scientific study, for people to contemplate and as a means of interpretation and environmental education. Currently, the Arboretum houses 52 species of trees and shrubs of temperate forests and forests in transition to low latitudes; each plant has been intentionally planted with proper techniques and with great intention by those who decided to adopt the plant and species. This reservoir has species of social interest for having diverse interests of use and for sheltering species under international conservation category.
Starting to build this space has meant having a valuable conservation tool in a region where deforestation is steadily advancing, as well as the expansion of the urban sprawl, often driven by criminal groups that invade properties to "sell lots" and end with all kinds of forest or vegetation of the place, being the peri-urban areas the most susceptible to this crime.
Behind this space of only .5 hectares are represented each one of our collaborators and donors; as well as each and every one of our purposes of conservation and ecological restoration of Pronatura Sur. To preserve the habitat of resident and migratory birds in the Highlands of Chiapas region, by propagating native species of temperate forests and planting them in a strategic and appropriate manner to enhance their survival; all this adding to the global strategies of climate change mitigation.
As a donor, you already have a space to contribute to this Arboretum!
Would you like to propose a name for this Arboretum? We are still defining it ...
