This last August, we started to plantig trees on the ciity outskirts. First, we talked with Municipal Department of Parks and Gardens, in order to locate areas to continue planting trees for our project.
We contact a landlord, 15 minutes to the south by bus, the area located in La Pila, a local Community, where there are lots of streets, vacant lots and parks with Zero trees.
The site selection was too easy, there are 2 little parks that we could analyze and selected to organize a plantation event.
Our site inventory includes:
Surrounding vegetation.- irrigated lawn, other trees, shrubs, non watered ground voer, chaparral;
Topography.- flat land, hilltop, hillside, broad valley, bottom, canyon bottom, close to a creek or wash;
Sunlight.- morning, afternoon, all day, partial shade, shade, reflected off wall or street, street light;
Slope.- steep, level, moderate.
Soil tyype.- hevay, sandy, pH level.
And the most important rule and regulation: SENSIBLE LOCATION!
Then, we contact our new volunteers group, neighbors, boys and girls, that are interested in becoming foresters.
Our Forester Program is a 2 day training about the tree basics, our Trees 101 Class, which provides essential trees planting and care basics.
After we contacted the volunteers, we did schedule, 3 days planting event,
1st day: logisticcs: how many trees to plant, how many people were interested to participate,
2nd day: prepare the event in advance, get ready the site for planting, water, soil, trees.
3rd day: planting day: 300 people arrived, 500 trees were planted and watered, 4 vehicles to help move 300 tools, and 4 hours of work were spent on the event.
At the end of the day we celebrate when we our planting event was declared complete. Sodas and sandwiches were enjoyed in a friendly way.
For now it´s all... Write You next time.
