Let me introduce you Our new group of Youth Volunteers, they are between the ages 18-21 yo. and they have benefitted from the program of the Urban Forest. They are currently undergraduated student at the local university, and are very excited to start the group of Youth Volunteers.
Last Saturday they were invited to the first training workshop for the group. To this event, 15 students attended. The workshop began at 9.00 am with an introduction to the urban forest.
Although the lessons can be applied to greening a street, a backyard, Proforestal`s goal is that everyone to apply skills everywhere there is a free space.
What we hope is that people learn how to green their neigbohoods, their home, their schools, and then, go back to their community and make things happen.
Other topics that they learned were:
-grass roots community -building
-getting permits
-selecting the right plant for th eright place,
-successful event planning
-tree care,
-composting.
With this new group of volunteers, we are planning to start transforming avaliable lots into greening spaces, little parks will go green, instead of garbage.
We are joining forces with Parks and Gardens Office to get where are the next places to be be planted and greening.
By the end of the season (late june), we are planning we can plant 750 trees, and continue woth the urban farming and forest.
We, Proforestal, estimate, that, just last year, we trained more 1000 volunteers, al of them trained by Samuel, Luis, and Evelyn, who have been in more than 15 event each. Every workshop, creates a sense of membership, where we start being a team, a green team.
The workshops take place from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. at Proforestal office and to attend a reservation is required.
Time to say bye for now, see you next time.
