By Roberto Ortega | Project Leader
Hey Roberto! When will be held our planting event? said Diana, from Fundacion Walmart. She was so excited of being part of our project, She wanted to bring volunteers to the event, in which we were programming from two months ago.
We went to Parks and Gardens Deparment, and tell them that we were going to make a big event and that we were going to plant 700 trees. They, the department, help us with the water, and proposed Av. Salvador Nava, one of the streets with more traffic in the city. So, we were in a point of no return, 2 weeks before the event day, we checked our to do list: trees, checked; water, checked, site selection, checked; permits checked; equipment and supplies, checked; preparing site for the trees, checked; volunteers, checked.
On the day of planting, 100 shovels and 100 peaks were available for all volunteers; Diana, Fundacion Walmart Leader, was so pleased, with the logistics that she wanted to participate in another planting event; the same day of the plantation event we did a talk of the importance of taking care of the trees, about the problem, the solution, the climate change, planting trees, taking care of the trees, watering, and tried to share our knowledge to the volunteers.
For San Luis Potosi City, we are trying to plant native trees like Huizache, Mezquite, Fresno, Pino piñonero, Yuca, and some exotic trees like Pirul chino, Pirul Comun, Jacaranda; from the begining of the planting season, last spring, we have planted 1500 trees, 50% of them are Mezquites. Mezquites dont require a lot of water, in fact it grows up in the Potosino Desert, so this tree is a must for our program.
In the Proforestal`s nursery, we are producing and growing 5000 Mezquites, 2000 pinos, 3000 Pirul chino, 500 Yucas.
The end of the season just arrive and we are planning the autumn-winter season, in which our goal is to plant 2000 trees. We hope that with the help and commitment of the people of San Luis Potosì, we will reach this goal by the end of february.
By the end of the planting event, more than 250 volunteers of Fundacion Walmart, planted 700 trees, mezquite, huizaches, fresnos, pirul chino, and jacarandas. It was one of our biggest events ever.
We will keep you updated as this project progresses.
