We've been making the final list for the 103 finalists of this year's Pitch it! The Kids Sustainable School Challenge and the kids ideas are super exciting, the grand finale is slated for April 1st, and there's other good news for the day of laughter, we'll tell you about that very soon.
In the meantime, exciting updates from the field!
Shipra and the Recycle to Clean Co.
The Big Problem: Shipra’s school was unclean and messy as the kids threw garbage all over the school. This led to parts of school being really not fit for kids.
Shipra's Solution! Recycled tin cans have been converted into dustbins and placed in front of every class. One for bio-degradable waste and one for plastic waste. Yea, seperate waste!
Sustainability and Impact: The bio-degradable waste is being supplied to the local organic compost manufacturer. Plastic waste is disposed with the help of Municipal Department. Kiran Kumari Jha, a Going to School team member, is mentoring the kids on recycling and reusing of materials that can be reused. And so far it's all good news.
Well done Shipra!
Chandan’s Clean Water for All Co.
The Big Problem: Chandan always wondered about the empty seats in the classroom. Reasons for kids missing out classes because of different health issues. He realized this is because of the lack of drinking water in the school. Clean water is the basic need for everyone to be healthy, not get sick and be able to concentrate!
Chandan's Solution: A new hand-pump was installed in the school which is providing water that is free of any contaminants. The health related issues have reduced and children have started coming to school regularly!
Sustainability and Impact: Anil Kumar, who specializes in water supply management, is mentoring Chandan and all the kids of the school on developing the habit of conserving water and the most judicious use of water. The school is marking out funds from which they can install a water cooler for the kids. Well done Chandan!
Zabeen and the Wacky Sports Co.
The Big Problem: Play in school is equally important as studies in the classroom. Girls in Zabeen's school are not playing for lack of safe space to play, lack of sports equipment or sports shoes.
Zabeen's Solution: To get the girls from the school to play, a safe space had to be created for the girls. With lack of space in her own school, a football pitch was made in a neighboring school. The girls have been provided with 27 pairs of shoes, many footballs and a woman coach to coach them to play football three times a week, after school. Whoo hoo, well done Zabeen!
Sustainability and Impact: The equipment needed to play and the football pitch are managed by the kids themselves. The kids are curious to learn and a girl’s football team has been created for the year 2017-18. Their confidence has increased and more and more kids have started playing. Girls are playing football for the first time all because of Zabeen's big idea!
