Pioneering Research on Adolescent Cancer in Chile

By Pablo Allard | Coordinator of Quality of Life and Development

We are pleased to share an important update on our project, Pioneering Research on Adolescent Cancer in Chile. This initiative seeks to better understand the experiences, needs, and long-term challenges faced by adolescents and young people with cancer who have stayed in support homes during their treatment journey between 2020 and 2025.

During the past months, we successfully completed the data collection phase of the study. Thanks to the trust and participation of former and current beneficiaries, we reached a total of 81 participants, exceeding our initial expectations and providing a valuable foundation for understanding this often-overlooked population.

We are now entering a crucial stage of the project: data analysis. To strengthen the quality and rigor of the research, we have secured the collaboration of two experienced researchers, who are currently supporting the analysis and interpretation of the information gathered. Their expertise will help ensure that the findings accurately reflect the realities and needs of adolescents affected by cancer in Chile.

At the same time, we are completing the administrative process required to deliver the incentives promised to survey participants. We are currently coordinating the distribution of prizes to the individuals who were selected through the participant raffle, as a way of recognizing their valuable contribution to this study.

Despite the progress achieved so far, the project continues to face significant financial challenges. Due to the limited donations received for this initiative, the vast majority of the research expenses have been covered directly by Fundación Camino's own resources. This has allowed the study to move forward without interruption, but it also places considerable pressure on the organization's capacity to sustain and complete the project.

Over the coming months, our focus will be on completing the analysis, identifying key findings, and preparing the results for dissemination. We believe this research will generate critical evidence to improve support programs, inform public policies, and strengthen opportunities for adolescents and young cancer survivors across Chile.

Additional support remains essential to help cover the costs associated with the research process, data analysis, participant engagement, and dissemination of results. Every contribution helps ensure that the voices and experiences of adolescents with cancer can be transformed into knowledge that drives meaningful change.

We are deeply grateful to our donors and supporters. Thank you for being part of this journey.
