In Chile, hundreds of adolescents with cancer face a healthcare system that fails to recognize their unique needs. This project aims to fund the first comprehensive research study on cancer among adolescents aged 10 to 19, generating crucial data to design better treatments, psychosocial support programs, and inclusive public policies.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death among children and adolescents in Chile, yet there is no national data or research focused specifically on the 10-19 age group. Adolescents over 15 are classified as adults in the healthcare system, leaving them in a statistical, clinical, and psychosocial void. This lack of information prevents the development of effective prevention strategies, tailored treatments, emotional support programs, educational reintegration plans, and family support
This project will fill a critical knowledge gap by generating the first national data on adolescence cancer in Chile. Through research, interviews, and analysis, we will identify medical, emotional, and social needs, reveal treatment gaps, and provide evidence to guide better care, targeted support, and informed policies transforming how healthcare serves adolescents with cancer and improving their quality of life and future, transforming how adolescent cancer is understood and treated in Chile
In the long term, this project will shape a more inclusive healthcare system in Chile, where adolescents with cancer receive age-appropriate treatment, psychosocial support, and educational opportunities. It will guide policies, improve survival and quality of life, and ensure that young people are no longer invisible - creating lasting change for future generations.
