Hard Work Paying Off!

Yoselin Works Hard Every Day To Learn To Walk
Yoselin Works Hard Every Day To Learn To Walk

Dear GlobalGiving Supporters:

Meet Yoselin, pictured below.  When our Community Health Workers first brought Yoselin to our attention, she was unable to sit, use her hands or speak. Although born a healthy baby girl, at about one year, she suffered a severe fever - we believe it was meningitis.  She was left severely physically compromised, her intelligence unclear.  For several years, when her parents went to work, without any other caregiving option and in an effort to keep her safe, Yoselin was left under their bed, in the dark, without stimulation or nourishment.

What did the Rosa Vera Fund do for Yoselin? Under the care of the RVF, Yoselin has made incredible strides.  She attends La Escuelita several times a week for physical and speech therapy (see more posts on Yoselin on our Facebook page).  Yoselin is now walking with braces and a walker.  She has also gained some dexterity in her hands and enjoys drawing and playing with her siblings.  Academically, she has proved herself to be a curious girl; she loves attending Special Education classes at La Escuelita as well. She has a great personality, and charms everyone she meets with her smile and determination.

It is all worth it.  Yoselin plays an integral role in her family.  She is no longer chronically sick and taking the bulk of the family's earning.  Perhaps most importantly, Yoselin has rejoined life in her community.  Her parents now take her proudly to church, grocery shopping, and to community events.  Yoselin is no longer left alone in a dark room.

Progress such as this doesn't take weeks, or even months.  It takes years.  That is what differentiates the Rosa Vera Fund from so many other organizations - we stick with the individual child for years and years, knowing that it is often not enough to just "help"; rather, offering life-changing opportunity to a disabled child takes years.

Thank you to our supporters who know that too.

Warmly,

Karen M. Melk, Chair
