De La Salle University (DLSU) through the Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) facilitated the conduct of the Solid Waste and Waterways Management (SWWM) Summit for its partner barangay Local Government Units in District 5 (Leveriza), Manila on June 14, 2019. The summit convened major stakeholders in the on-going DLSU-COSCA’s Sustainable Development Goals Localization Project addressing pressing environmental and disaster risk reduction management issues in partner communities.
The head of the Department of Public Services, City Government of Manila gave a report on the city's situation in terms of solid waste and waterways management, confirming that solid waste and water management remains a major challenge in the Philippines especially in urban areas like Metro Manila.
After the city situational report, representatives of COSCA’s partner barangay local government units provided updates on their respective barangay’s SWM and WM situations.
The SWWM Summit which aimed to come up with an action plan for an integrated implementation of SWM and WM in the respective partner community, provided venue for the joint action planning among stakeholders and for the synchronization of efforts relative to the ongoing environmental and disaster risk reduction management initiatives of the university and its partner communities.
The summit was organized by COSCA’s Lasallian Environmental Sustainability and Governance unit under the Lasallian Sustainable Development Program.
