For 2018, government through the OCD gives priority to the training of the basic sectors of society on DRRM. This serves as foundation to achieving community resiliency and will help increase community-level support and participation in DRRM efforts. During the series of DRRM training, local leaders from COSCA’s partner organizations were oriented on established DRRM principles.
Also, during the series of DRRM training, the basic sector participants were introduced to the Philippine DRRM system. They were able to familiarize themselves with the following hazards normally encountered in their respective communities: a) hydro-meteorological hazards b) geological hazards, c) rain- induced landslides, d) Climate Change and e) human-induced hazards.
The last module reviewed the relevant DRRM principles discussed during the training through simulation activities. The participants were given cases that happen during calamities and were requested to apply the DRRM principles and other learnings shared by the resource speakers specially when responding to the risks present in their communities during calamities. The participants shared their realization that the way to achieve community resiliency requires their commitment to understand the basic knowledge of the DRRM principles and awareness of the various risks and hazards observed in their respective communities. This awareness will assist them in planning for the appropriate response.
