The members of Uvaani community group in Mbooni district, southeast Kenya have asked for support to build a sand dam so 1,200 people can have their own local source of clean water. (See pics for info)
Uvanni community live in a semi arid area where water is in short supply. Women and children spend hours a day collecting water from far away, thus having no time for education, housekeeping and generating income. 46 associated community members have approached Excellent for support to build a sand dam: it will capture the seasonal rain and filter it through the river sand. This will positively impact the wider community of 9,600 people by providing year-round clean water for at least 30 years
The community gets ownership of the project: They will collect the sand and stones needed, build the dam & terrace the land next to the site in order to grow food. Excellent Development will provide technical support, cement and monitor the progress.
Very low maintenance technology, a sand dam typically provides permanent clean water for 1,200 people, allowing them to grow more food, plant trees and raise livestock. The local water table will also be recharged, improving the environment.
