The cost for one pack of sanitary-pads is $0.75. This is the equivalent for rice, sufficient to feed one family for a day. Millions of the poorest girls and women in Nepal can simply not afford to buy them. In our villages, women and girls are using old rags, which is causing disease. Besides this during their monthly cycles women are considered impure and it is for these reasons that many girls are forgoing school during their period. We'd like to provide pads for 500 adolescents for 5 years.
A lack of menstrual hygiene is the cause for bacterial infections and the stigma attached to it is utterly humiliating. For these reasons many girls are forgoing school during their menstrual cycle. This is degrading and constitutes a big disadvantage for them in their education.
We are planning to provide "Sanitary-Pads" to the most underprivileged adolescents who are deprived of the same. The distribution will be handled from Peer to Peer. In each school a committee will be formed by the beneficiaries for the distribution of the pads. Moreover we will organize frequent awareness programs in the schools,to inform about proper menstrual health, address the stigma attached to the menstrual cycle and provide counseling and empowerment.
