Dear Supporter,
Menstruation is a natural process that affects 3.5 billion women and girls worldwide. However, it is often stigmatized and surrounded by misinformation, which leads to discrimination. At least 500 million women and girls globally experience period poverty - the inability to access menstrual hygiene products. This lack of access directly affects their physical, reproductive, and mental health.
As we continue to amplify this campaign, we leveraged the Wasichana Wa Afrika Summit 2023 to continue the conversation on menstrual hygiene, primarily focusing on addressing period poverty and shame. The summit brought together more than 500 girl leaders and supporters from Rwanda, Benin, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, fostering engaging discussions and providing valuable insights on Menstrual Health, Period Stigma, and Period Poverty under the theme "No more limits, period!" The main takeaway from the summit was that girl leaders demand parents and guardians to provide moral support and create comfortable environments for them to have these conversations. Governments need to reduce the costs of menstrual products, making them more accessible to girls.
We invite you to join us in eliminating period poverty by establishing period banks in four partner schools across Kilifi, Kwale, Turkana, and Samburu counties. These banks will provide menstrual hygiene products and educational resources to 850 girls and young women for one year.
In solidarity with girls always,
Akili Dada.
