Since January 2015 NGO Ba Futuru's Consolidating Peace and Democracy Initiative has undertaken twenty-nine 5-day community training on conflict resolution, gender-based violence, and civic education for 743 participants (441 Male and 302 Female) included traditional leaders, youth, NGO workers and police, empowering them with enhanced knowledge and skills.
The project has only one training left to go to complete the 30 planned trainings over the three year period, and then we focus on follow up evaluations with those participants that previously attended training to look into how the information and skills provided has helped to transform attitudes and behaviors.
One positive outcome of the project was that participants would influence the mind-set and behavior of other people and contribute to the conflict transformation and prevention within communities. They did not only acquire an increased knowledge of conflict resolution, gender-based violence and civic education from the trainings, but they then also passed on information about these topics to their friends, family and community.
For example, in a follow up evaluation, a 30-year-old member of the Timor-Leste National Youth Council in Zumalai sub-district administrative stated: "I felt happy and appreciated with the lessons that I learnt a couple months ago and I have shared the important lessons on conflict resolution and violence prevention with youth and the community in order to create friendship in their daily lives. Since attending the training I have changed my life. The lessons helped me to be a mediator to resolve the conflict in my sub-village on a farm and I used the mediation process to facilitate the problem. Finally the two parties accepted each other.”
