In our last report, I shared with you the news about our partnership with a local physician in Janakpur, Nepal to start a home hospice program there. Since then, our physician partner Dr. Ajay Mishra has completed the online training through the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) and has already started to provide hospice and palliative care services. A total of five patients have already received hospice and palliative care services under this program. One such patient is Sambhu (name changed) who was in tremendous pain and discomfort due to the many surgeries and treatments he had for his head & neck cancer.
Dr. Mishra and his team visited Sambhu at his home and provided comfort care including wound care and pain management. The hospice and palliative care team educated the family members on how to care for Sambhu and in consultation with the family, developed a care plan for Sambhu that focused on keeping him comfortable. Thanks to your support and willingness to help, Sambhu and his family could sleep comfortably in the night after he was enrolled in this hospice program.
The role of trained healthcare providers who are also culturally apt is extremely important in end of life care. Dr. Mishra says, “Hospices provide care for people from the point at which their illness is diagnosed as terminal, to the end of their life. Hospice care places a high value on dignity, respect, and the wishes of the person who is ill, and aims to look after all their needs, as well as the needs of the person’s loved ones.” The new model of hospice and palliative care partnership we have adopted in Nepal enables local healthcare providers to provide holistic care to terminally ill patients through the integration of scientific evidence, culturally appropriate practices, and sustainable, cost-effective services. We invite you to be part of this history-making efforts and help thousands of terminally ill patients in these communities live comfortably during the last few weeks or months of their lives!
