Expanding hospice care to patients in Janakpur

By Tara Shah | Project Leader

Since we started the home hospice program in Patan, Nepal in January of 2016, our home hospice program has grown, evolved, and served more than 100 terminally ill individuals and their families in the Patan area. As the Binaytara home hospice program in Patan became popular among families of terminally ill patients, requests for similar programs started coming to the BTF leadership from many patients and families of terminally ill patients in other parts of the country.

While the focus of our home hospice program in Nepal remained providing the highest quality, culturally acceptable, holistic care to patients in our care; the BTF leadership constantly looked for ways to expand the program to other parts of Nepal. As a result, we announced a partnership opportunity for physicians, non-profits, and healthcare organizations in Nepal to start a home hospice program in their communities. We are very excited to share with you that we have recently entered into a partnership with a  physician leader in Janakpur (a city in the mid-south region of Nepal with a population of over $200,000). We expect this hospice program to start in early August after the hospice team completes the necessary hospice and palliative care training.

Under the Binaytara Home Hospice partnership, we will provide hospice and palliative care training and necessary support as well as fee for service to the hospice team for providing home hospice care to the terminally ill patients in their area. Sustainability remains at the core of our project goals; the goal of this home hospice partnership is also to encourage and enable the healthcare providers as well as the community members to make this program sustainable after two years of starting it.

We would like to thank you helping us bring home hospice program to the people of Nepal. We will continue to update you about our progress in this new endeavor.
