This project will provide scholarships to forty secondary school students from an impoverished rural community in the eastern Rwanda. The community is still rebuilding and recovering from the aftermath of the 1994 Tutsi Genocide as evidenced by the large number of child-headed households. These three-year scholarships change the course of a student's life. Additionally, these funds contribute to the revitalization of livelihoods and consequently, the socio-economic growth of the community.
Despite Rwanda's achievements in access to education, low quality of learning and transition rates remain challenges. According to the UNESCO, only 8.3% of Rwanda's population aged 25 and above have completed secondary school while only 3% of secondary school graduates go on to university. The 20.4% youth unemployment rate leads to drug addiction and teenage pregnancies in youth, which aggravates the vicious cycle of poverty in a country where 39% of the population live under the poverty line.
Our comprehensive three-year scholarship package enables students to attend schools of excellence. Schools of excellence provide better life and learning conditions as well as more opportunities to further education and employment. The support includes a year long tutoring, full tuition, transportation to and from school, school supplies and spending money. Our student selection criteria include family poverty index, score in the national exam , conduct and character at school and gender equity.
Empowering young people builds the foundation for future generations. In a poor community, sponsoring a child's education means supporting their family at large. Many of our students come from child-headed homes, while those who have families are often the first ones to attend secondary school. Most of our graduates build homes for their families, provide financial support, and contribute to raising siblings. Our scholarships thus have a reverberating impact throughout the community
