Summary

Over the last two years FFF has held Neonatal workshops in four villages in Nepal, three in Nawalparasi and one in Bara. In each village there were a notable number of babies (32% to 46%) that were underweight. To better serve the young mothers and children, we propose quarterly meetings with the mothers to continue discussions regarding healthier food choices and kitchen gardens. We will also track the health of the mothers and babies and suggest medical followup if needed.

Challenge

After completing 4 Neonatal Workshops and Filter Distributions we found a need among the women to have follow up meetings to encourage them and provide more training on healthy mothering, nutrition, child safety and nutrition for young mothers. Quarterly meetings for young mothers are an informal but effective way for the follow up to continue. These meetings provide a platform for young mothers to share their concerns and receive informed advice on child rearing.

Solution

Quarterly meetings will provide regular contact with a trained Nutritionist and Health worker. Regular contact for the young mothers who can share their concerns with a trained and caring staff member. These meetings will encourage mothers to bring nutritious meals to their families. Projects such as: kitchen garden training, patterns to make washable sanitation pads, making healthy baby food, etc. will be taught at each meeting. Plus, the health of the mothers and babies will be monitored.

Long-Term Impact

Reduce infant mortality, encourage healthy eating, encourage caring attitudes, spot health problems early, and provide a support network for the young mothers. Kitchen garden training will provide fresh vegetables to the landless families. The village women will bond to support each other. The women will eventually take on the role of mentors to other women in the village. Filters will be monitored to assure they are functioning properly.
