Specialized Care for Children

Her mother Sumaiya, at her side, little Zeenat is one of the children receiving care at the Mandara Hospice for Children in Hyderabad, India. The children’s hospice – providing care to children with cancer and other complex, life-limiting illnesses – is the first free-standing children’s hospice in India.
It’s a small, but wonderful success story in a country where diagnosis of life-limiting illness comes when children are often in advanced stages. The compassionate and complex care needed goes beyond what can be provided in a hospital setting.

Compassionate Care at Home

The compassion of the home visit teams is so evident in the social worker’s eyes and gentle touch as she talks with a patient and his family.
From a grassroots initiative to a successful approach to providing home-based palliative care to cancer patients, and their families, the Hyderabad Centre for Palliative Care now has five specialized teams that visit patients in their homes extending the outreach of palliative care to those receiving treatment for cancer.
It’s an initiative that Two Worlds Cancer has supported from its infancy. The teams – a doctor, nurse and social worker– visit patients and their families, four or five a day, six days a week providing urgently needed care at home. Today two of those vans provide specialized care for children living with cancer.
The care is provided free of charge to families. The impact is very real in a country where a cancer diagnosis often comes when the cancer is severely advanced. It is care that means patients do not suffer alone at home with pain and other symptoms. And it provides emotional support to the families too.

Compassion & love at Mandara Children's Hospice

Love is so evident when you watch the parents with their children at the Mandara Children’s Hospice in Hyderabad, India.
For so many families it has been a long journey – emotionally and often in distance – to arrive at the 10-bed hospice located in a quiet corner of the city. In 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, our partner organization the Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society opened the children’s hospice at the site of the Kumudini Devi Hospice for adults. Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration was one of four NGOs that helped fund development of the adult hospice in 2013 and supports the Mandara Children’s Hospice today through our Sunflower Children’s Network.
The Mandara Children’s Hospice provides care for children and their families facing life-limiting, serious illnesses and end-of-life care. Many children will see their last days in the compassionate care of the palliative care team at the hospice and others will stay at the hospice for respite care for their families until they can return home.
It is care that is essential for children around the globe. And a human right.
