Parenting in Kenya has been a major challenge especially in rural areas and urban slums. This has resulted to high levels of child abuse whether physical, sexual or through neglect. Poverty, illiteracy and harmful traditional practices has significantly contributed to the problem. Kenya has over 10,000,000 parents and research have shown that majority are not aware of children rights, child abuse or alternative methods of discipline and punishment.
P.O.K will train parents in many areas including children rights, child abuse, child protection, communication with children, discipline, alternative methods of punishment, drug abuse, sex and sexuality, fatherhood. Our field experiences have shown that once parents are educated levels of child abuse in the area are reduced and they are start to enjoy parenthood. They are also encouraging others to join our programme.Training will be in community halls,churches,schools,radio,t.v. and newspapers.
Research in Kenyan jails have shown that 80% of inmates were abused as children.Child abuse has a negative effect in the lives of children that only multiplies. The project will educate over 100,000 parents on issues of parenting and child abuse thus lifting them out of ignorance and ensuring over one million children are protected.Eventually a new culture of child rights and child protection will be established ensuring children grow to maximize their potential and enjoy living.
