Portrait of a student you're helping

It’s hard to believe but it only takes $.50 a day to put a child through one of our elementary schools for an entire year.

Take for example Abdul Shakoor, age eight, whose father died last year so his mother works weaving carpets to support him and his four brothers. He is now enrolled in the third grade at Barakat Elementary School in Attock City, Pakistan.

Abdul is the eldest son, so Pakistani society dictates that he should be leaving school to help support his mother and his younger brothers, but fortunately for Abdul his mother is determined to have him get an education so she insists that he goes to school. To help make ends meet Abdul works as a house servant after school. His mother is taking a big risk going against the norm by putting her eldest son through school so it is even more important that our schools remain a safe space.

Since Abdul's the eldest he is currently the only one of his brothers that are currently enrolled in school. Thanks to the security improvements that have been made to the schools there is now an even greater chance that Abdul's brothers will be able to get the same education as he did when they get older.

Abdul dreams of going on to high school, and eventually college where dreams of becoming a software engineer.

In recent months the Pakistani government has made a push to have all illegal Afghani refugees leave the country. Thankfully most of our students are in the country legally but that doesn't mean that there isn't a strain in the world around them. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far we are able to ensure that our schools are a safe space for our students to come and learn when there is so much violence and uncertainty surrounding their daily lives.
