Pakistan Flooding Final Report

By Jamie Cross | Senior Emergency Programs Manager

Since June 2022, Pakistan has been bombarded by severe monsoon weather. As of August 27, rainfall in the country was equivalent to 2.9 times the national average. The extreme weather has caused widespread flooding and landslides, leading to the destruction of property and infrastructure. There has also been an enormous impact on human lives, an estimated 1,033 people have been killed and 1,527 people injured.

Approximately 33 million people in Pakistan have been impacted by the disaster. Some of the most urgent needs among those affected are those in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). An estimated 3.8 million people are in need of WASH support due to contaminated water and limited access to hygiene items.

The contamination of water supply and destruction of water filtration systems in Pakistan has already exacerbated ongoing disease outbreaks. The World Health Organization noted the increased spread of illnesses like acute watery diarrhoea, dengue fever, malaria, polio, and COVID-19.

The humanitarian situation in Pakistan will require assistance for months to come, as it is predicted to take up to 6 months for the flood waters to recece.

Our team identified the lack of access to clean drinking water as a high-priority need in Pakistan, so the first stage of our 2022 Flood Response involved shipping and distributing Family Emergency Kits. Each of these kits contain an Rainfresh Household Water Purification Unit, a compact and easy-to-use system that uses gravity-driven ceramic filters to give families access to clean drinking water. The Rainfresh cartridge removes 99.9999% of bacteria and more than 99.95% protozoan cysts. . It filters water at a rate of 2.25 L per hour to provide families with enough daily drinking water. In order to maximize shipping efficiency, each kit comes with a number of basic personal care items like bars of soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes to assist families in maintaining a level of adequate hygiene. Along with clean drinking water, basic hygiene including washing your hands is critical in the wake of a disaster to minimize the chances of illness and disease.

GlobalMedic also deployed members of our Rapid Response Team (RRT) to Pakistan to help carry out the response. The RRT focused on three programs: health, WASH and food. The team locally procured 312,000 sachets of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and distributed them to villages affected by the flooding. ORS is a type of fluid replacement used to prevent and treat dehydration, especially due to diarrhea.

Due to the severe flooding, water infrastructure has been heavily damaged or completely destroyed leaving families without access to clean drinking water. The RRT locally procured 22 large point of use water purification systems that are being installed in remote villages. They also brought 2 AquaResponse3 systems to Pakistan, which will be deployed to villages in need of drinking water.

Finally, we provided 10,000 food hampers to families displaced by the flooding. These hampers provided a mixture of culturally appropriate staple good like rice, lentils and dates. The hampers were procured and packed in Pakistan, supporting the local economy.

Thank you for your support.
